A PASTORAL LETTER TO RESIDENTS OF GARLAND COUNTY . . .
As religious leaders representing a cross-section of denominations, we counsel young people as they encounter the many social pressures of life. In this letter, we address one issue: the need for a comprehensive sexuality education program that is medically-accurate and age-appropriate. One that recognizes the importance of abstinence and at the same time encourages youth to make healthy decisions in the wider spectrum of sexual activity.
Many existing programs in the public and religious arena do not approach the topic in a comprehensive manner. Thus, many youth do not have a sufficient background by which to understand their sexuality and accordingly, to make wise decisions. Consequences are obvious. We affirm a broad-based program that provides youth with current and proven information regarding sexuality. One which includes: gaining essential knowledge, development of self-efficacy, interpersonal skills, and an understanding that responsibility has consequences. In short, we endorse a comprehensive sexuality education program that is holistically centered, respects learners’ social, ethical, and religious backgrounds, and provides age-appropriate information.
Locally, Smart Teens / Healthy Decisions Coalition has received a grant to implement such a program in Garland County. We support this program for the sake of the health and well-being of area youth.
