Smart Teens/Healthy Decisions Coalition

Equipping Teens with Knowledge and Skills Needed to Stand Up to Today's Pressures

Our Goal:

The  The Smart Teens/Healthy Decisions Coalition goal is to instruct 500 Garland Co. junior and senior high school-aged students in cooperation with participating school districts and community organizations using research-based, proven curricula during the program year (August 1, 2008-June 30, 2009) with 375 of participating pupils completing at least 80% of the curriculum modules, especially those studnets characterized "at risk."

Participating schools and organizations have the opportunity to review and to select one of eight proven effective curricula to best meet the needs of their student population. Each of the educational curricula seeks to:

 §        promote abstinence  and/or delay
      or reduce sexual activity among
youth

§        improve decision-making and refusal communication and advocacy skills to

empower area youth to stand up to

many of the peer pressures they face

§        to reduce/prevent teen pregnancy  to

      reduce/prevent the rate of sexually

      transmitted infections
